Why build voicemail on-chain?
Everyday messaging apps claim to be "end-to-end" encrypted, yet they still route data through corporate servers, rely on phone numbers, and lock users into closed ecosystems. Thomas O'Neill set out to prove that the BSV blockchain — combined with Project Babbage's peer-to-peer tooling — can deliver a true server-less, permission-less alternative for short audio messages.
How Project Babbage helped
P2P Voicemail lets any two Metanet IDs exchange voice messages (and optional micropayments) directly on-chain. Encryption happens client-side; the WAV data live in Output Baskets and reach the recipient via the Message Box overlay. Users sign & pay with Metanet Desktop, so keys never leave their devices.
End-to-End Private
Voicemails are AES-encrypted to the recipient's key—only they can decrypt.
Native Audio
Uses the MediaRecorder API—no plugins or downloads required.
Server-less Delivery
Output Baskets + Message Box push the TX directly—no central server.

Security & Anti-Fraud Design
- Cryptographically-anchored identity — Messages target unique Metanet IDs, not spoofable phone numbers. Wallets can surface certificate checks (e.g. "Bank XYZ ✔").
- Tamper-proof audit trail — Voice blob hash + sender signature are on-chain. Any post-delivery edit (deep-fake morph) breaks the hash instantly.
- Timestamped, provable delivery — Immutable on-chain timestamp stops "I called last week" claims; ledger shows the exact minute.
- Pay-to-speak anti-spam fee — Sender must spend dust + fee (or user-set micro-payment), making robo-spam economically painful. Users can raise minimum fee during scam waves.
- Selective disclosure & traceability — Recipients can reveal decrypted content + proof to law-enforcement without exposing other messages.
- Optional "reputation overlay" — Future overlays can auto-quarantine messages from Metanet IDs flagged for scams.
Together these layers flip the economics: legitimate businesses gain cryptographic credibility, while fraudsters face higher costs, zero anonymity, and instant forensic traceability.
Results & Road-map
• Hackathon Outcome — Placed 6th and received an honourable-mention prize for showcasing the simplest peer-to-peer use of the new stack.
• User Experience — Prototype works in any modern browser. A typical send/receive round-trip took < 7 seconds in live demos.
• Next Steps — Selective-disclosure certs, push-to-talk mobile UI, group messages, and optional spam-filter fees. Long-term goal: publish as a Metanet-native "voice layer" other apps can plug into.
